Research Activities at the Centre site

The first job cluster consists of field research activities at the site of the future Radioactive Waste Management Centre. On 25 January 2021, this was contracted to a bidding group comprising Geotehnički studio d.o.o. (Geotechnical Studio LLC), the Faculty of Geodesy at the University of Zagreb and the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering from Zagreb. The main purpose of planned research is to gain a complete and precise picture of the geological composition and terrain structure at the planned Centre site. The research will enable the evaluation and characterisation of the respective Centre site, design of radioactive waste storage buildings/facilities and required infrastructural elements as well as provide the data needed to prepare an environmental impact study and conduct an environmental impact assessment.

The public will be fully informed in a transparent manner and it will actively participate in the process of selecting a suitable location for the Radioactive Waste Management Centre. The research activities will take place over a 19-month period and include geo-research, a study of hydrological and hydrogeological properties of the site and limited field research into the state of flora and fauna, forest ecosystems and the use of agricultural land in the immediate vicinity of the site. The research involves the following activities:

  • analyses of photogrammetric aerial images, satellite images and relevant cartographic documentation;
  • field research;
  • geoelectric sounding;
  • seismic reflection and refraction;
  • electrical tomographic measurements;
  • near-site georadar surveys;
  • water permeability testing in drill holes;
  • petrological and geomechanical rock analyses;
  • tracing;
  • geochemical analyses of drilled rocks and groundwater.

The research results will provide basis for a study report unifying all research findings. The study report will aim to accurately and concisely highlight the most important findings from every research discipline and provide main conclusions based on these results and their role in planning and evaluating the site for future Centre construction. All research findings will be published and made publicly available.
