WELCOME

Nowadays the application of radioactive sources and materials can be found in many different areas, from science and medicine, the industry and agriculture, all the way to energetics. Regardless of whether radioactive materials are used for medical diagnostics and treatment, as integral parts in smoke detectors and lightning rods, in different types of research, or as part of the electricity production process in nuclear power plants, their application always generates radioactive waste. Every waste material that contains radionuclides is considered radioactive waste and, if its level of specific activity is considered harmful on human health and the environment, it must be disposed in a safe manner.

Compared to other countries, Croatia has small quantities of radioactive waste, but the fact remains that this waste must be disposed. Besides institutional waste originating from medicine, the industry, science etc., Croatia is under the obligation of ensuring the disposal of half of the radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel generated in the operation of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant, 50% of which is owned by the Republic of Croatia.

For this purpose, the Fund for Financing the Decommissioning of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant and the Disposal of Krško NPP Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel was founded in 2008. The Fund’s activities include activities related to the acquisition, maintenance and increase of value of assets for financing the preparation, review and implementation of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Waste Disposal Program pursuant to Articles 10 and 11 of the Intergovernmental Agreement, and activities related to the coordination of preparation and drafting of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant Decommissioning and Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Waste Disposal Program, pursuant to Radioactive Waste, Disused Sources and Spent Nuclear Fuel Disposal Strategy (Official Gazette 141/13). The Fund also has the obligation to establish a radioactive waste management facility in Croatia, i.e. the RW Management Center.

On our website you can find out more about radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel management, the Fund's activities and obligations, obligations of the Republic of Croatia, as well as European and world practice regarding radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel.
